In Their Words

Over more than two decades leading technology organizations—at Electronic Arts, Shutterfly, Polycom, eBay, LinkedIn, and others—I've been fortunate to work with people who took the time to write down what the collaboration was like. The recommendations below are theirs, not mine. They were written across different companies, different decades, and different kinds of problems, by people who had no coordinating motive beyond the work itself. I've grouped them by the themes that kept surfacing.

Brett Lemoine — OS Shaman Technology

On cutting through the noise

Brett is sane and composed. When everyone else is having agenda collisions and floundering, Brett sticks to an effective, outcome-oriented agenda. He has both the belief that doing the right thing will pay off and the patience, persuasiveness, and vision to see it through. Brett's ability to articulate facts accurately and dispassionately in the face of criticism or pandemonium facilitates action.

Matt Wagner Then Global Network Architect, Polycom · Now President, Client Focus

His calm demeanor and ability to see past the "noise" to the heart of a problem directly translate to significant time savings and clearly measurable results. Unlike many managers that I have worked with at previous companies, Brett not only understands that authority comes with responsibility—he demonstrates it daily.

Ted Treiber Then a colleague at LinkedIn · Now Principal Engineer, Cisco

Brett is a seasoned agent for change who is not afraid to challenge legacy assumptions in order to optimize for evolving business needs. He is reasonable, upbeat and pleasant to work with, and I have enjoyed working closely on a small team with Brett as well as later interacting as an organizational partner.

David Lovell Technical Director II, Electronic Arts

Brett is a keenly smart, intuitive and hard-working manager. Always organized and very perceptive, he has an almost instantaneous ability to accurately assess difficult problems and arrive at the required solution(s). Brett is also a very capable manager of personnel; understanding the nature of the job and always providing the commensurate leadership to gain the trust and respect of those who worked with and for him.

JF Sullivan Then a colleague at Habeas · Now Chief Strategy Officer, Snowdrop Solutions

On transforming fragmented organizations

It was my distinct pleasure to work alongside Brett in our efforts to transform the way that EA QA's technology organization functioned. Brett has a wealth of knowledge in how to run technology organizations at scale, and I quickly came to rely on his insights and expertise when encountering new challenges. I strongly believe that the changes we were able to implement over the last two years would not have been as fast, nor as effective without Brett's assistance. I appreciate his openness, but also his ability to hold me accountable to be better.

David King Senior Director of Technology, Electronic Arts

Brett substantially transformed the Polycom IT operations team from a site-focused team, supporting islands of business, into a global support team collaborating across multiple sites and regions globally. He also established a customer feedback and satisfaction program that provided an avenue for dialogue between IT and the rest of the business. In short: IT became an effective business partner and customer-oriented organization.

Ian Watson Then a desktop support manager at Polycom · Now Senior Manager, Cybersecurity PAM, HP

Brett provided immediate leadership and direction when he arrived at Polycom. He is solely responsible for converting an IT organization with small-company practices and behaviors, focused on individual sites, and changed them into a team capable of supporting a global enterprise. Brett is everything I look for in a manager.

Ray Giles Then Senior Systems Administrator, Polycom

He came in and quickly got a handle on some complex organizational challenges. What impressed me most wasn't just what he did—developing and implementing things like RASCI matrices and resource allocation—but how he did it. Brett has a knack for understanding the nuances of what people are struggling with, and he genuinely listens to get to the root of the problem. He didn't just roll out solutions; he guided the team through the changes, making sure everyone understood their roles and accountabilities.

Alex Litvak Associate Technical Director, Electronic Arts

I have been privileged to work both directly and indirectly for Brett over the multiple years he had been with Shutterfly. During his time, he made vast improvements to our processes, established synergy across fragmented teams and truly operationalized our development activities.

Ray Downie Then a colleague at Shutterfly Business Solutions

On bridging technology and business

Brett is a smart, detail-oriented executive who is a business person first and a tech guy second. He really understands how to use technology to run a business. Furthermore, Brett is an excellent manager. His direct reports genuinely like and respect him.

Chris Brubaker Then a colleague at Habeas · Now SVP Marketing, Smartwyre

Brett has an excellent balance of technology, process and leadership skills. As director of our Operations, IT and Customer Support teams, he took on growing, rapidly evolving organizations and made them run more predictably and efficiently. Brett continuously demonstrated the ability to attack issues, boil them down to their essence and drive to realistic solutions. Beyond all this, Brett is extremely principled and disciplined—you could always count on his motivation to do the right thing for the right reason.

Michael Mills Then a colleague at Habeas · Now VP, Business Operations & Performance Management, Oracle

Brett brings a wealth of technical and management expertise, but the ability that impresses me most is his logical thinking. Applying his logical thinking skills and his uncanny ability to describe complex technical problems in business terms, he has been very effective in resolving many complex problems within the organization.

Shane Lim Then a colleague at eBay · Now Vice President of Technology Services, Coupa Software

To say that Brett was a great Technical Manager really doesn't capture all of the value that Brett Lemoine provided to eBay. I consider Brett a "Technical Artist" who is a fantastic Manager. Brett has mastered the art of taking a large or small business problem and in a short amount of time creating a solution that always turned out to be the best possible for the business. If business excellence through technology is a concept that is desired by your organization, there is nobody better than Brett Lemoine.

Raymond Garren Then a Technical Manager at eBay · Now Managing Partner, Midwest Cloud Computing

On making complexity legible

He is able to articulate new ideas easily and in a way that contextualizes the impact for any role. He has great documentation and organizational skills and can make complex planning processes more simple for many others to contribute to.

David Lovell Technical Director II, Electronic Arts

Brett is an amazing resource wherever I work with him. At Fusion-io he was the primary technical interface and manager for two strategic partners. He has the unique ability to translate complex concepts and ideas such that they can be understood at a variety of levels. Combined with his strong work ethic, Brett was invaluable to our organization.

Vicki Miller Then a strategic partner at Fusion-io · Now VP of Sales, West Enterprise, Dremio

I worked with Brett on a multiyear effort that included outsourcing print operations for a Fortune 10 company and developing new applications for document routing and archiving. Brett demonstrated impressive knowledge of all facets including infrastructure, network, data security, business continuity, application architecture, and development methodology. Our organization needed to learn to think differently, and Brett was an effective change agent who was willing to challenge us and who could bring clarity to situations where there was no established roadmap to follow.

Steve Ginestra Partner on a multi-year Fortune 10 engagement

On teams people come back to

I never saw Brett try to micro-manage his people, yet he was able to balance the amount of free reign he gave them in order to keep them on task and on schedule. Brett was very much the type to say "don't tell me you can't do it—tell me what you need from me in order to be able to do it." Having worked with literally hundreds of companies over my consulting career, I can honestly say that Brett is one of maybe five people that I could see myself working for long term—and coming from me, that's saying a lot.

Andrew Abbate Principal Consultant, Convergent Computing (eBay engagement)

I have had the pleasure of providing Brett services at more than one company over the last few years. He is very responsive and is always on his "A" game. He has an incredible ability to fix the things that are broken and to build solid camaraderie among his team. He is a phenomenal leader and coach to his team, and I've never met anyone that didn't love working for him.

Rebecca McCartney An account manager I worked with across eBay, LinkedIn, and Polycom · Founder/CEO, StratITech Services

Recruiting Brett into LinkedIn was an exciting moment for me, since at the time, this was one of the most critical, hard-to-fill positions in the Operations organization. As a candidate he was easy to work with, but as a hiring manager, he is a phenomenal recruiting partner. Brett must be a great executive to work "for," as he has a huge following—which almost takes away the talent acquisition piece from my recruiting efforts.

Sangeeta Narayan Recruited Brett to LinkedIn · Now Founder & CEO, Catapulse Partners

When Brett added the Customer Service team at Habeas to his direct reports, I wasn't sure what to expect. Managing a CS group seemed very different from his Operations duties, but Brett quickly showed me how versatile he is. Brett also has the rare ability to stand up for his employees when they're right, while at the same time making them understand where the other party is coming from. All in all, a great manager and a great guy to have on your side in a boardroom brawl.

Josh Barrack Then a colleague at Habeas · Now Manager, Professional Services, Fortra

Let's talk

If your technology organization has the talent but not the outcomes, we should have a conversation.
